Rail Baltica is planned to create a continuous standard‑gauge rail corridor from Helsinki (via a future tunnel to Tallinn) down to Warsaw, but only the Tallinn–Warsaw section is firmly under construction today.
What Baltic Rail / Rail Baltica Is
- Rail Baltica is an EU-backed greenfield railway project connecting Helsinki, Tallinn, Pärnu, Riga, Panevėžys, Kaunas, Vilnius and Warsaw on a standard‑gauge high‑speed line.
- The overall axis is conceived as a north–south route from Finland through the Baltic states into Poland, integrating the region with the wider European rail network.
Helsinki–Tallinn connection
- The “Helsinki” part of the corridor depends on a proposed undersea Helsinki–Tallinn rail tunnel under the Gulf of Finland, which remains on hold; the Finnish government has called it unrealistic under current conditions without major additional EU funding.
- Feasibility and impact studies (often branded FinEst Link) have found the tunnel technically and economically plausible long term, but there is no approved construction schedule or opening year yet.
Tallinn–Warsaw section
- Rail Baltica between Tallinn and Warsaw is actively being developed, combining new high‑speed tracks in the Baltic states with upgraded and new sections in northeastern Poland.
- Planned travel time from Tallinn to Warsaw on Rail Baltica is around 6 h 45 min–7 h, a major reduction from current rail journeys that can exceed 19–22 hours with multiple changes.
Status and timeline
- Rail Baltica’s Baltic state main line (Tallinn–Riga–Kaunas/LT border) is targeted for initial operations around the early 2030s, with some Polish sections to the Lithuanian border scheduled shortly after 2030.
- Because the Helsinki–Tallinn tunnel lacks political approval and funding, a direct Helsinki–Warsaw train via Rail Baltica will not be possible until both the tunnel and the main line are completed; realistic expectations point to well after 2030, and no binding date exists.
